Living Earth in Christchurch

Our state of the art composting facility in Christchurch opened in March 2009. Under contract with the Christchurch City Council (CCC), Living Earth has designed, built and is now operating the composting plant at Bromley.

In Christchurch Living Earth selected the tunnel system. It is relatively simple, well-proven, cost-effective and most importantly meets CCC’s and its ratepayers’ requirements.

Christchurch City residents have the benefit of not only having their greenwaste collected at their gate, but their kitchen waste is also collected and both waste streams are composted in our indoor tunnel system! Our facility will produce 65,000 tonnes of organic weed free compost per year for use by Canterbury’s strong rural sector to improve soil quality and plant growth. This results in lesser waste volumes to CCC’s landfills.

LEL was awarded the contract in January 2008. We had 13 months to design and build the plant - a very tight time-frame. Living Earth commissioned Allen and Associates to manage the project and Ebert’s Construction to design and build it. Living Earth pays credit to the disciplined project management structure and can-do attitude of all parties including the CCC which enabled this project to be success.

Getting Christchurch residents on board

CCC has undertaken an incredibly successful campaign with its residents with the ‘Love Your Rubbish’ promo to educate people about what can be recycled with Living Earth.

Our Christchurch Compost goes ‘Global’

In late 2009, a shipment of one of the first ‘brews’ of compost from the Christchurch Facility was sent to Noumea.
