Living Earth Limited is New Zealand’s foremost supplier of compost and compost based products, in both the Auckland region of New Zealand and latterly, with a state of the art new facility just opened in Canterbury in the South Island. Products are supplied to the rural and landscape supplies markets in bulk while bagged supplies are available at all good Garden Centres.
Our company was established in 1994 with a commitment to produce top quality growing media for the landscape and gardening sector. Our founders, Rob Fenwick, John Tapper and Roger Wark are committed to making organic compost and from it, compost based products from waste streams generated by New Zealanders in their everyday lives, in particular greenwaste and foodwaste.
Since 2007, Living Earth Limited has been a jointly owned company with the original founders retaining 50% ownership and the other half owned by Transpacific Industries Group (NZ) Ltd, a subsidiary of Transpacific Industries Ltd, www.transpacific.com.au, a major leader in the recycling of waste products in New Zealand and Australia.
Living Earth plays an active part in New Zealand’s business community in the pursuit of strategies to reduce waste and landfill dumping across our country:
• We are a member of the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development.
• As a member of the Government’s special working party on waste, Living Earth helped develop the NZ Waste Strategy and in particular the establishment of national targets for Landfill reduction.
Living Earth – Recycling waste in the New Zealand community
Each year Living Earth diverts more than 100,000 tonnes of greenwaste and foodwaste from landfills in New Zealand and composts it into high quality garden planting media. Recently Living Earth processed its 1 millionth tonne of greenwaste into compost!
The Auckland Composting Facility
Our purpose built composting facility is situated at idyllic Puketutu Island. Annually, Living Earth takes 40,000 tonnes of greenwaste from councils, landscapers and home collections and converts it to a rich dark organic material that is 100% weed free. Large windrows of greenwaste are laid out and tended by our operations staff who check the process daily. Our technical team perform tests on the maturing batches to ensure its quality is of the highest standards.
Added matter such as sand, bark fines, topsoils or organic fertilisers that are used in our growing mixes, is sourced as near to the Auckland region as possible, making our products arguably the closest to ‘’eco-sourced’ growing media you will find in our region.
By consciously selecting our Living Earth planting media, Aucklanders participate in a fantastic story of sustainability and recycling that is good for their city and their gardens!

Our Kaupapa
Our kaupapa or philosophy is based around that of sustainable development. By reducing waste and creating products to restore soils, we satisfy our customers and add value to our partnerships with other businesses. And there are obvious benefits to the communities we serve and the environment as a whole.
