Rain Garden Mix

Living Earth Rain Garden Mix is a unique blend of soil media for absorbing stormwater run-off. Rain Garden Mix was designed in conjunction with several of Auckland’s Local Authorities and has become the preferred media for rain gardens, tree pits and stormwater planters. It is also a great solution for the home gardener whose section is often water-logged with stormwater run-off in periods of heavy rain.
Its benefits are:

• Absorbs stormwater, removes pollutants and grows plants
• A scientifically formulated blend of Living Earth Compost, sand and topsoil
• Excellent moisture retention and drainage balance
• Meets ARC specifications

How it works:

The structure of Rain Garden Mix gives it optimum water retention capacity, allowing for maximum contaminant removal to occur. This is balanced with an excellent infiltration rate, so that stormwater run-off can move through the garden.

Recommended Application Rate
  Depth
New Rain gardens 300 - 400 mm

Following placement, Rain Garden mix should be lightly compacted either by

• walking over the area or
• by lightly tamping with a backhoe bucket.
To further assist settling, the area could be irrigated briefly.

We recommend the use of a Living Earth More than Mulch layer on top of Rain Garden Mix. This helps in maintaining soil moisture and avoids surface sealing/crusting. It can also help distribute the force of a heavy downpour of rain onto the garden.
